Landscapes : I find some of the most interesting photographs are where human creations intersect with nature. Depending on the play of light, the time of year, the time of day, beauty can be captured by the camera lens for those who can see it. In other instances, there is nothing man can add that would make a natural object or a beautiful scene any better than it already is.

Architecture : I have had an interest in architecture and it many forms since taking a few courses in college. I observe how architects have used classic design principals established in antiquity and applied them to modern day structures, from civic and corporate buildings to individual homes. Of particular interest are the classic Greek, Roman and Gothic and the styles of early colonial, Victorian, Queen Anne periods, Spanish, and those of the Arts and Crafts movement.

Barns : Barns are an offshoot of my Architecture category. There are so many types of barns. I enjoy capturing the unique aspects of each one, angles, textures and shadows. Interesting also are the cultural and ethnic influences on barns in America. Connecticut, New York and Pennsylvania barns are distinct in many ways and different from barns in the west, some of which have a Mormon touch.

Houses of Light : It is plain to see that lighthouses intrigue me. While not as obsessed as some (who plan vacations to various parts of the country/world where the itinerary is plotted from one structure to another), if there happens to be a lighthouse in the area, I will stop by to add a photo (or 2 or 3) to my collection. Mankind has sought to make navigation by sea a safer endeavor for centuries and although technology has outstripped the need for these unique structures, it is heartening to see many aficionados banding together and creating organizations to preserve them as the historic and architectural treasures they are.

COPS Swamp Tour 2012 : Photography field trip with Charter Oak Photographic Society, led by Peter Guerard. Shoot was in northwestern CT around Norfolk area. Sites visited: Lake Winchester, Hall Meadow Brook Reservoir, Smith Pond and Mad River, Beckley Pond Brook, Haystack Mountain State Park, Wood Creek Pond, Campbell Falls State Park.

Woodworking : Working with wood is another of my passions. Oak has been one of my favorites for making furniture, especially white oak. The past few years, I have been working from patterns of the mission and arts and crafts movement. Stickley, Harvey Ellis, Greene and Greene, Limbert are favorite designers. There have been more than a few original designs as well. Continuing classes at Connecticut Valley School of Woodworking have honed my skills and provided opportunities to branch out into other activities such as making small boxes, inlay and learning the finer points of finishing.
